Peleus and Thetis

Based on the Greek myth of Peleus and Thetis (a goddess and the daughter of Neptune). This netsuke portrays Peleus in his bid to marry Thetis, struggling to hold on to her as she changes form in her attempt to escape. Here Thetis has change to the form of a large sea bird. It symbolizes the struggle for permanence over change.
